The name of the city is derived from the term "Shivmoga", "History behind the city name due to story that the Lord Shiva drunk Tunga River water using Mogge at the city, hence, on 1 November 2006 Shimoga, officially renamed as Shivamogga, Shimoga is known as the gateway to the Western Ghats and called “Gateway of Malnad” by the locals.Shimoga is famous for Jog Falls.
